teaching
Besides working as a designer, I have also taught afterschool computer graphics classes at Markham, and Captiol Hill Elementary Schools as well as Jackson Middle School. I work with the Sun School (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) program. The SUN Community Schools Initiative is a community-driven model that allows each school community to design the programs that fit neighborhood needs in Portland, Oregon. In the classes, I teach students Computer graphics programs available on their equipment. The programs include: Microsoft Suite Office programs such as Word, Powerpoint, Publisher, and Photo Editor. I also have experience teaching Broderbund's Kid Pix and open source programs such as Inkscape and Gimp. Students have an opportunity to show their project at the end of the class at a gallery "party".
Projects have included:
- Self-Portrait: digital manipulation of self-portrait
- Plants: scanning various plants and digitally manipulating the photo
- Logo and Business Card creations in Microsoft Word
- Powerpoint Presentations: sample topics include How to make friends, Egyptian Pharoahs, Space, Sea Creatures, etc. Students are taught how to use the internet for research and save clip art and photos to use in their presentation. They can also hand create artwork and scan it to use in their presentation.
